To obtain and NHS hearing aid, you must first see your GP, who will refer you to your local hospital, where you will be put on the waiting list to see an ENT Consultant.

Are all hearing aids the same?

No, the job of any hearing aid is to amplify sound and improve your quality of hearing, but there are different types available that dot the job in different ways. The Hearing Aid Dispenser will advise you on the best hearing aid to help with your particular hearing loss and requirements. This could be one that goes behind the ear or a hearing aid that fits completely in the ear.

Yes, this can be fitted to existing glasses, or customised frames.Martyn Lane and our Dispensing Optician Martyn Horton will gladly advise you on this.

What's the difference between digital and ordinary hearing aids?

There are two types of hearing aid - Analogue (ordinary) and Digital. Most hearing aid users will only have experiences analogue sound. All NHS hearing aids are analogue. With a digital hearing aid, the difference is that the sound is processed digitally through the hearing aid. This has many advantages, sound is generally clearer, sharper, and full automatic, that is, no volume control. You may also have a program that will deal with background noise, and digital hearing aids have a digital feedback manager - no whistling should occur.

How much are digital hearing aids?

They do cost more than an ordinary hearing aid, but as they have so many more features it is advisable to arrange a trial to experience the improvement in sound quality.

This depends upon which hearing aid is suitable. It may cost anything from a few hundred pounds to over a thousand pounds. You are not just paying for the hearing aid itself. This cost includes hearing assessment, fitting of the hearing aid, any adjustments and a full follow-up service.

Is there a warranty included in the price of a hearing aid?

Yes, all analogue hearing aids have a twelve-month warranty; all digital hearing aids have a two-year warranty.
